SPRING SERIES: 16

Discover the Power and Depth of 16

Join us for 16, Red Clay Dance Company’s latest concert exploring identity, resilience, and transformation. This compelling program features two unforgettable works that embody the emotional depth, technical excellence, and thought-provoking themes our company is known for. Experience the world premiere of a new work by legendary choreographer Bebe Miller, a visionary artist whose impact on contemporary dance is unparalleled. Alongside this debut, we proudly present the reimagining of Written on the Flesh, a landmark piece by our Founding Artistic Director and CEO, Vershawn Sanders-Ward. Created in 2016, Written on the Flesh posed the urgent question, “What is the residue of elegant racism, and how is it written on the flesh?” This new restaging takes the inquiry even deeper, drawing inspiration from Isabel Wilkerson’s thought-provoking book Caste. In Wilkerson’s words, “As we go about our daily lives, caste is the wordless usher in a darkened theater, flashlight cast down in the aisles, guiding us to our assigned seats for a performance. The hierarchy of caste is not about feelings or morality. It is about power—which groups have it and which do not.” This reimagined work continues to confront systemic racial inequities while searching for resilience, forgiveness, and love to build a more equitable future.
